Sermilik Fjord, nestled along the east coast of Greenland, is a breathtaking expanse of natural wonder, characterized by its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. This vast fjord system is inhabited by majestic creatures such as whales, walruses, seals, and even polar bears, thriving in this remote territory. Adding to its allure are the small settlements found on Angmagssalik Island and the nearby mainland, where resilient communities blend harmoniously with the rugged environment. Our journey through this enchanting region promises a unique exploration of both the captivating nature that envelops the fjord and the rich cultural tapestry of the people who call it home, allowing for a truly immersive experience.
Day 1: We touch down on Kulusuk Island, where the crisp Arctic air greets us as we step off the plane. A brief walk from the airport leads us down to the charming village, filled with colorful houses and rugged landscapes, setting the scene for our adventure. Our sailboat, the Aurora, awaits us in the harbor, ready for the journey ahead. After a wander through Kulusuk village, absorbing the local culture and preparing for departure, we indulge in a selection of delicious food and drinks. As evening descends, we settle in for our first night aboard the Aurora, anchored serenely in the tranquil bay of Tuno.
Day 2: We begin with an early rise as we prepare for a long sailing day across the expansive Angmagssalik fjord. The horizon stretches wide before us, offering dramatic views that heighten our anticipation for what lies ahead. Navigating through the stunning narrow fjord of Ikasagtivaq, we find ourselves enveloped by towering granite walls that reach skyward, their rugged majesty a testament to nature's artistry. Chunks of floating ice drift around us, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere as we carefully maneuver through the small, icy obstacles. Our goal for the day is to reach the picturesque village of Tiniteqilaaq, where we will anchor in its tranquil bay.
Day 3: We commence our journey with a visit to the quaint village of Tiniteqilaaq, where the warmth of its inhabitants offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. After carefully analyzing the Icecharts and assessing the currents, we embark north into the vast expanse of Sermelik fjord. Here, monumental icebergs punctuate the horizon, and we are treated to breathtaking views of the icecap stretching across the fjord. As we navigate these stunning waters, we make our way into Amitsivartiva fjord, seeking a safe anchorage that provides shelter from the drifting ice and powerful currents. As night falls, the possibility of witnessing the enchanting northern lights adds a touch of magic to an already extraordinary day.
Day 4: The day begins with an early rise and a hearty breakfast, fueling us for a long sailing day ahead. As we set sail down the current, the serene waters of the fjord system cradle our journey, offering deep, calm passages that invite smooth navigation. The stunning landscapes unfurl before us, guiding us towards the fairly large town of Tasiilaq, nestled against the striking backdrop of Angmagssalik island. Anticipation builds as we near our destination, where a helicopter (optional) awaits to whisk us to Kulusuk airport, making this segment of our adventure a marvelous blend of exploration and exhilaration.
